Hi, I was recently told that taking melatonin or valerien root will help me fall asleep better, but will it help me to wake up easier as well?

Where do I get melatonin & Valerian root? Are they pills?
(I don't sleep normal hours, 3am-3pm and I get 12 hours a day on the average.)

I have used valerian root as a sleep aid. I bought the valerian-mint tea at the Vitamin Shoppe. The mint settles the stomach, and masks the slightly unpleasant smell and taste of the root.
I found it only really made me sleep if I was ready, lights off, in bed. If I drank the tea and decided to watch the t.v., I found I could easily fight off the effects. So when ready for sleep, I usually fell into a good sleep very quickly (maybe about 10 mins) and slept very well. I made sure I have about 8 hours for sleep, and wake up feeling great. Good luck to you.

Both Melatonin and Valerian will promote sleep, make sure you have at least 8 hours to sleep as you will wake up groggy if you sleep less than that after taking those sleep aids.

Valerian has a very strong smell...like stinky socks...melatonin does the same job without the odor.

I don't much about valerian root. Melatonin long term effects are inconclusive. The one answerer who said that it was a naturally produced hormone in our body is right; with that being said, supplements ingested over long periods of time send signals to your brain that you are already have enough of the hormone in your body. So your natural process of producing melatonin may be superseded by the artificial supplement you take to go to sleep. Look at steroids for example. When men take steriods enough, signals tell the brain that he already produces enough testosterone so they decrease in the secretion of the hormone. That is why men who take steriods at a young age end up with small reproductive organs. Now i'm not saying that melatonin will do that, but it melatonin might permeanantly shut off your natural melatonin maker. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Depends whether or not you have a low melatonin level. I would start with valerian root first and if that does not work, then try the melatonin. Here is a great website for natural, pharmaceutical grade products. www.benuts.com
Ask for Monica - She's great!

Melatonin helped me sleep really well and I felt fresh and bright the next day. Valerian never did much for me, but my friend sometimes takes it. You can get both of them in most large drugstores in the vitamin aisle or in a health food store.

Melatonin would be better, it's your body's natural hormone that regulates sleep. Valerian is an herb - I hear it is addictive. You can get Melatonin at a health food store. The best kind is slow release form.

Ask doc about these things before pursuing them. Some drug stores have "roots", but it usually is easier found in health food places. BTW: Melatonin, since it is naturally produced by your brain to help you sleep, by sense of medical knowledge, will work better. Let doc fill you in on the particulars.
