My mother's side of the family is English. My father's side was German...and I have always had a soft spot for Great Britain....but I would have to argue that it wasn't necessary to bomb Dresden and Hamburg to the extent that England did....I'm sorry...I cant buy it....

I was in Dresden October 2003....and Hamburg September 2006....both cities are especially beautiful......Dresden has largely been rebuilt.....but not all people in Dresden feel warm feelings toward England...in fact some have said they wish UK should be nuked or bombed and feel the heat from those bombs the way the dresdeners felt the firestorm...where charred bodies lying everywhere....

I don't know if it was necessary, there are different opinions on this. It was not really of so much use as unlike the Japanese leadership the Nazi leadership could simply not be made to surrender by this as they just didn't care. If they had just surrendered when the war was lost for them these heavy bombings would have never happened. I'm German and I have heard stories of bombings as a child that shocked me quite a lot, but I always thought that the Nazis and all who supported them were mainly responsible for it, because they started the war and didn't surrender when they should have known they had lost. That cities are not the same as they were is something I often heard. But honestly I don't care too much about the buildings that were destroyed in that time when so many millions of people were killed. Of course people also died in the bombings, but that were a fraction of World War II victims. Oh, and most of the synagogues were already destroyed by the Nazis when the bombings started and not many of them were rebuilt after the war. My home town wasn't bombed in the war, it has lots of the old half-timbered houses and is quite pretty, but the synagogue was destroyed in 1938 and there is only a memorial at the place now. I am not resentful because of the bombings, it was only a part of the inferno of World War II that was caused by Germany. I am much more bitter with those Germans of that time who brought so much death and suffering over others (I don't mean all, but I mean a large percentage of the German population that willingly followed Hitler). I also don't know anyone personally who would seriously have ill feelings for Americans or British because of the bombings.

The allies bombed industrial sites during WWII. Some bombs may have strayed of target and hit residences by accident.
The bombs used back then were dumb although the allies did start working on more controlable bombs towards the end of the war.
German industry had to be reduced or stopped so that replacement weapons could not be built as fast as they were being destroyed or not produced at all.
Rail and road bridges were bombed to help stop the flow of troops and weapons to the war fronts or at least delay them.
And the allies helped rebuild all the damage in West Germany after the war.

Well, yes Hamburg was bombed in WW2 by the Allies as was other German cities, because a War was on and those cities contained manufacturing war plants feeding the German war machine, thus air power was used to obliterate them. You say the UK bombed Hamburg? Well, yes and no. The UK was a part of the Allied cause with thousands of American, British, Canadian and Australian aircraft based there to fight in the war that encompassed practically all of Europe. The American Air Force also bombed Hamburg. What you saw in 2006 is the fantastic ability of the German people to re-build after total destruction of over 50 years ago. So, in other words, like all other German cities ( except those in the former East Germany=now being done), they have had 50 years plus to rebuild and so it seems obvious to me that what you saw ( and I as well in 1986) is the result over that period of time, A combination of modern and classic culture traditions.

It was carried out by the Luftwaffe, and hit many towns and cities across the UK, but the main attack was concentrated on London. The Blitz inflicted about 43,000 deaths and destroyed more than a million houses)
