"Listen, 97% of marrages end in divorce...so buying a used ring is like buying your teenager a used car. You know that damn thing's just gonna end up around a telephone pole"
This was said on a Fox sitcom: Happy Hour. When i heard it i personally thought it was hilarious. But my female friend was very offeneded by it, she said that it was an insult to the institution of marriage, and that buying a used ring was an insult to personal marraige. Is she taking this to hard, or am i just blind?

I am married and I think it is funny; don't marry this girl she has no sense of humor. If I have learned anything by being married for 6 years, I must have a sense of humor. Also my husband and I spent 150 dollars at James Avery on our rings. We felt that we should concentrate on the marriage and not the materlistic things that are associated with it!

I think she is taking it a little hard. I think it is kinda funny, because it is partly true, but I can see how some might be insulted. What I have to say though is that marriage is NOT about a RING, and if that's what people think then no wonder so many of them get divorced. I don't think that there is anything wrong with buying a used ring if that's all that a guy can afford; it is the THOUGHT that counts. However, if he buys it because he's cheap, then I would probably be offended...

I do agree with her that it is "an isult to the institution of marriage", but not that "buying a used ring is an insult to personal marriage". Marriage is somehting that should be taken seriously and it certainly shouldn't be funny that 97% of marriages don't work. That, in itself, is not what marriage is about. Divorce isn't supossed to be a "whoops, I messed up" thing. So yeah, I agree about it not being funny and it being offensive. But, the ring thing is no big deal. Sure, every girl would like to get her OWN ring, but it's not gonna kill the girl or the marriage if she doesn't. A ring is a ring.

I can see how she would take it as an insult. Your g/f is probably a person that truly believes in a life-long marrige to one person. Sticking together no matter how rough it gets. Good for her! So many people today take marriage so lightly- some change spouses more than they do panties. However, I am sure that it was meant to be taken as a joke and was not intended to offend anyone. She should lighten up just a little. Any marriage in your plans?!? Make sure that ring is BRAND new, as it should be.

Well being the hopeless romantic like your friend I too would find it offensive but in all actually the ring is just the material thing; the commitment is what is really being made and no I dont believe that 97% of marriages end up in divorce. Communication is key to any relationship and when that ends, its over.

She's takin' it a bit hard... if the best a man can do is a used ring... that's sufficiant... just because somethings not "new" doesn't mean the intent and the love behind it is any less...
I thought it was a bit funny too... if that set her off... try this one...

Sounds like she can't take a joke. The point of sit-coms are to entertain people. It was just a joke. It's like saying 84% of all statistics are made up on the spot ;) Some people will laugh at that. Some won't.
The trick is to change the number everytime you tell someone that.

There is nothing wrong with a used ring. If one wished one could get the stones placed in a new setting.

Hysterical! I love the statement...
Your friend needs to loosen up.
Most of my friends love estate jewelry (fancy word for old used rings...lol)....and their wedding rings are estate jewels. I know most girls think its bad karma to have a used ring. I say....as long as its not the ring you used before (a prior marriage)...then used is fine. A diamond is a diamond...is a diamond.
