Sunlight contains all the colors of visible light, this is why direct sunlight looks white. But when you look at the sky away from the sun, you are not seeing direct sunlight, you are only seeing what bounces in your direction from that part of the sky. That light came from the sun, bounced off something in the air and then entered your eye. The things that bounce sunlight in the air are very small particles and even single molecules, and they only interact with the shortest wavelengths of light (violet and blue), while the longer wavelengths (red and yellow) keep right on going, never getting a chance to get bounced your way. That's why the sunset is red when you look back toward the sun: all the blue light has bounced off in somebody else's direction and what you see is what's left (red and yellow). This process is called scattering, and it's also why very thick ice (like in a glacier or an iceberg) seems blue.
