I experienced irregular period when I was in "perimenopause" so I was put on birth control pills. There are many types and dosages of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. I would try the lowest possible dose first as there are risks and side effects. I just googled "irregular periods and birth control" and got a lot of listings. Oh! And by the way, the birth control pills not only helped my periods become regular it also helped with the severity of cramps and mood swings. Good luck researching and finding out all of the facts.

There are many over the counter products, but most don't live up to the hype.
Your Doctor is your best source of information.
