Nice "warm" not hot shower. Try to relax and don't over analyze it. Reading always helps me, but the trick is not to do it in your bed....sit in the living room. Good sleep hygiene is to only use your bed for sleeping and sex.
Now, if the insomnia is lasting for days at a time, you may need to see your doc and ask for a sleep aid. Lunesta or Sonata are mild enought to take, as long as you can get 8 hrs of sleep before going to work or starting your day. Ambien is a little testy right now. A lot of people are having some bizarre behavior taking this if they aren't use to taking prescription medications.
Good luck, and I hope you get to rest well soon.

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

Probably not the best answer but I have the tv on low in the background, I'm soon nodding off...
Hot chocolate is nice but it's stimulant so avoid that, try Camomile tea - it's a bit gross but it does the trick. Try also homoeopathic remedies such as 'Kalms' or dropping a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow.
Hope you catch some Zs soon :)

This may sound strange but before you go to bed chew on the heart of a cabbage, it actually works.

Try some caffeine free night time tea, some warm milk with honey in it or listening to soothing music.
