Can females live with females, and males with males or do they all need to be housed separatly? One per cage?

Actually dwarf hamsters are the only breed of hamsters that are social and enjoy living in "communities". They breed rather fast so usually communties are single sexed. They can fight and be nasty, best way is to get siblings, or slowly introduce them.

Generally, no. Some are able to if you put them together at a young age. If you buy them as babies, place them in one cage but remember to provide one of each thing so they don't have to share. If you see any signs of fighting, separate them. They can't be together and should be housed in different cages.

females can live together but not males they fight a male can live with a female until they have babies then take out male or he will eat them.
