You probably just need a tune up. If the plugs aren't firing correctly, then it's not burning all the gas it needs. When you need to go faster, you push on the pedal more. A lot of your fuel is not being burned and going out of your exhaust. This will also lead to premature failure of your catalytic converter.

Start with a tune up and go from there.

There is some kind of engine treatment like Marvel Mystery Oil you can get at Pepboys or other auto store. Maybe it would smooth your engine, and improve mileage.
Since it is a high mileage car, there might be a lot of disposits in the fuel system. use some fuel treatment. Marvel Mystery Oil actually treats both engine and fuel-- choose the heavy duty type. Just add according to instructed amount to your gas tank. See if it gets better. Use good gas on old cars is also helpful. Low grade gas cause more accumulations of dirt in the system then makes performance worse.

If you tune the engine with spark plugs and filters that's good. If you want to do a complete tune up also try replaceing the O2 Sensor that usually helps the greatest and is the most often overlooked item in a tune-up, other than underinflated tires.

Assume you have checked for raw gas leaks (puddles on the ground, strong odor, etc.), is black smoke and/or strong unburnt gas odor coming from tailpipe? If so check: 1) Air Intake- Check for obstructions in the air cleaner, also check air filter for dirt buildup or other contamination such as oil or water. 2)Tune Up- Be sure all spark plugs are firing (also check and make sure no spark plug wire is loose/disconnected) also check distributor cap and rotor if so equipped.

Needs a tuneup. Worn engine. Dragging brakes. Poor driving habits.

Would need to know a LOT more info. Make & model, engine, trans, etc. What kind of mileage you used to get and what you get now, etc.
