First would have to be the communist period. Secondly, I would say that during WW2, the Russian people suffered horribly. Millions dead at the hands of the Nazi's. But I also see that the current Russian government is heading back down a very dark road.

In HS i got here upon the Vietnam conflict quite exciting because it became VERY distinct to different wars, fantastically their guns and their use, and the needed false impression that the conflict began because of communism, even as it did not. also, the Holocaust is extremely exciting yet there are fairly some distinct factors and biases and theories in the back of it that may make it somewhat confusing reckoning on the source you get your information from - yet both way that's an really exciting and historic adventure. Edit: purely study your edit, declaring no Vietnam conflict and that i'm assuming the WWII element would contain the Holocaust or is that an finished distinct adventure on your instructors eyes?

Certainly, Stalin´s rule was a naked tyranny, plenty of political persecution and followed by a disastrous war, both events resulting in the loss of millions of lives. But we must remember that this brutal dictatorship, vicious as it was, prevented the disintegration of the country after the civil war.
Had the country be dominated by te anarchists, the aftermath could have been the fragmentation of Russia.
From my personal point of view, the darkest hour in Russia's history was the Mongol invasion, since this could have change the culture and the identity of the country to the degree of sparing the Russians from the European family. Remember the words of Pushkin: "they didn´t bring us algebra, they didn´t give us architecture or classical traditions (his remarks referred to Spain under the muslims). Their legacy was only one of terror and isolation. "

Well i think that only who can talk about this is Russians. We can only guess what was Russia's worst period.Communism does not mean that it's dark period...i grew up in communist time and it wasn't so bad...it was much much better then in this democratic period of my country(doesn't mean that I'm communist).
So firstly we need to get a table, and 100 L of Vodka and make the Russian speak!

The Mongol conquest was the worst, followed by the Time of Troubles in the early 1600's.

Yes, definitely the Stalin era of the early twentieth century. Thousands upon thousands were killed by forced labor camps under his regime.
