Our Lady of Meritxell Day, 8 September (1278)
The entire year is one long round of celebrations in Andorra! But it’s usually over the summer when each village or town celebrates their “festa major” (celebration of a town’s patron saint). Everyone, young and not so young, come out to party and there’s never a lack of food: grilled sardines, grilled ribs, catalan sausages, burgers, as well as, “coca” (local sponge cake), moscatell, chocolates, etc.
At night there are dances that are very lively and frequented by youths from other parishes. You can see how in Andorra everyone knows each other!
There are so many “festes” that in September there’s even one dedicated to the country’s visitors, “The day of the tourist”, as a sign of hospitality to all those visiting the area.
