it should be illegal everywhere, except in cases where the mother is in danger or if they were raped.

Abortion is illegal NO WHERE in the United States because of the Supreme Court decisions in the 1973 case Roe V. Wade which found that a woman has an inherent constitutional right based in privacy to end her pregnancy if she sees fit. The case laid out a strict trimester test for when abortion restrictions could be put in place. Abortions are unrestricted in every state in the first and second trimesters while in the thrid trimester the state can impose some restrictions on abortions as long as an exception is always made in cases where the pregnancy threatens the mother's health. A second abortion case in 1994, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, altered this standard somewhat and said that the states cannot place an "undue burden" on a woman's right to have an abortion. This ruling reaffirmed the basic finding of Roe that a woman does have a constitutional right throughout the United States to have an abortion, but also found that the state could regulate abortion in every trimester as long as it did not place that "undue burden" on the woman who wanted to end her pregnancy. This meant that a regulation requiring a minor to inform her parents she was having an abortion was considered legal under the Casey ruling, but that a requirement that a woman inform her husband that she was having an abortion would not be allowed, since this placed an undue burden on her. In short, abortion is legal everywhere in the United States as of 2006, but it is more restricted in some states, mostly in the South and West, than it is in say, California or New York.

it's not illegal anywhere, because the Supreme Court has determined that a woman has a constitutional right to an abortion, at least before viability. In South Dakota, the legislature passed a law basically banning all abortions last year, to test the continuing viability of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, two supreme court cases on the issue, but this year, the voters of South Dakota basically recalled that law.
In other states, minors need parental consent (like in Alabama) or a judge's order to go forward. In some states, the state can restrict abortions to hospitals (rather than clinics) or place restrictions on late-term abortions. The federal government has tried multiple times to ban the proceedure called partial dilation and extraction ("Partial birth abortions"), but they've been shot down by the courts for a failure to include exceptions to save the health or the life of the mother.

The NARAL website lists laws by state. Of course, this is a pro-choice organization, but you can see what restrictions there are on a per-state basis: http://www.naral.org/choice-action-center/in_your_state/who-decides/state-profiles/minnesota.html
