I have a 50 gal. tank and a top of the line filter so I don't think that the amonia and waste will be a prob.
I have 4 goldfish and they are pretty big and I have one pleco I would like to know what other fish other than goldfish I could put in there?
I had a african clawed frog but I think they ate him :(

Dear Hanna,
There are a few species that can live peaceably with goldfish. A 50gal is the perfect size for goldfish.

Here are several fish which should do very well with your goldfish.

Dojo or 'weather' loach
These cute and interesting loaches make fine tankmates for goldfish. They grow to 7 inches or more and are mottled brownish in color with a slim body frame almost eel like. Dojos are also from the area goldfish originated from in china...and do well in cooler temperatures that goldfish prefer. They are called Weather loaches also because it is said that they will react to barometric pressure that comes just before a storm. Dojo also means "house" in either Japanese or Chinese (sorry I cannot remember)

Hillstream Loach
These tiny pan-cake like fish are very unique in the goldfish aquarium. They behave much like plecos by attaching themselves to the glass or decor. They resemble sting-rays in a way but stay small.

Bristlenose Plecostomus
Also known as Ancistrus catfish. The bristle nose is far from the ordinary pleco with great long bristles covering their nose and giving a very unique and interesting appearance. They are also fine in cooler water --but no extremes please-- and provide the plus of not eating plants, will not grow large, and are good algae eaters overall.

Rubbernose pleco
Another fish somewhat resembling the Bristlenose but of course without the bristles. They can thrive in cooler water but as with the bristlenose, extremes are best avoided. These plecs grow to at the most of 4 inches.

Apple snails or 'Mystery' snails
These are great little none-fish creatures that do well with goldfish and are fun to watch. Beware they will eat plants faster than goldfish will.

White cloud Mountain Minnow
These little plain and fancy fish are often recommended for goldfish. They originated from chinese streams and live in similar conditions to goldfish. But sometimes goldfish may mistake them for food. Especially if the goldfish are large.

Finally, remember that the best tankmates for Goldfish are in fact other goldfish that are of the same or very similiar variety. But these fish are tried and true methods that should work out well.

I really hope this helps! Feel free to write with any concerns.

Best wishes,
Fishfanatic

You can keep dojo loaches (weather loaches), they have great personalities, and may even learn to eat out of your hand or swim into your hand. They are also good bottom feeders and will keep any snail problem in check. They are cool water fish, need the same water parameters as goldfish, and should get along with them fine. They prefer to either be alone or in a group with three or more (not aggressive, they just have a weird thing with not liking groups of two). They are social so they really prefer groups. I also would have recommended garra pingi pingi instead of your pleco, but seeing as you have a pleco, I wouldn't add any pingi until your pleco dies or loses interest in eating algae. They are small algae eaters that prefer cool water and live in groups.
In case you don't already know, don't get tropical fish like tetras, barbs, cories, gouramis, etc. because they need completely different water conditions than your goldfish.

You don't have any more room in your tank, sorry.
I'm assuming you have Fancy Goldfish, right? They should actually have 20 gallons for each fish (so for 4 fish, that's 80 gallons). Do you have a common pleco? He should have another 20 gallons to himself... Unless he's a bristlenose or rubberlip (which only grow to 4-5"), then he'll just need 10 gallons to himself.

Goldfish and plecos are possibly THE biggest waste producers in the fish world. They a lot, and they poop a lot. They poop all the time. I would suggest you look into getting a 100 gallons for your group of fish.

Also, goldfish are coldwater fish, meaning they should have temperatures of 69-73F. Most other fish, being tropical community fish, require 78-80F... So you can't mix them.

We have a 29 gal. with our goldfish and pleco (from our outside pond) and they are BIG too. The only fish that I would say would be Barbs (Tiger barbs and Green barbs). We had angels, a Ram (had two, one died, they don't like the movement) and a Glassfish too. Now we have a 75 gal. And the goldfish have there own tank with pleco.

I think you can put some trigger barbs in there with them.Maybe a Molly or two.Try not to get anything else they might want to eat the gold fish tail.

there are quite a few fish that can live with goldfish. try dragon fish, tetras, algea eaters, and small ciclids (like kissing fishes). another option is to go to a pet store and ask for "community fish"
