I am looking to buy a manual cleat nailer for hardwood floor instalation. I am looking at either a Bostitch or Porta-nails nailer. Reviews for both products are good. I like the Porta-nails ratcheting mechanism and its versatility, but it only comes with a 1 year warranty. The Bostitch has less versatility but a seven year warranty. Does anyone have any opinions about either nailer, or how they compare against each other in terms of reliability and sturdiness?

I bought the Bostitch MIII off of ebay thinking that when I was done with the flooring job I could resell it for far less than the rental would have cost.

I used it to install about 300 sq foot of 3/4" oak flooring and it did a great job. Going to install another 200 sq ft in January. The nice thing about the air nailer was the consistency of the drive. I suspect that you really need to have a consistent and steady hand to get a manual nailer to drive the nails to the proper depth.

If you are sitting there trying to pull in a board with a chisel while holding the nailer in place and hammering it with the hammer, well it just is something that would seemingly take more arms and hands than the typical person owns. (I did have my wife help me sometimes, even with the air nailer.)

I included a link below that i found on line that sells used nailers and new ones.

You've already done your homework and it comes out a tie. I would look for a tie-breaker and that is the 7-year warranty. These guns live a rugged existence. It only makes sense to consider how it would be fixed if it broke down. Purely by reputation, Bostitch is the winner around where I work.

You may consider versatility more important than reliability. But installing flooring with an air gun doesn't require versatility. Hopefully, you will use it for other applications -- in which case you might consider versatility more important than I do.
