Sorry my friends, but All of you are WRONG!!! Christopher Columbus left the Port of Palos Spain on August 3, 1492. (His first voyage of 4). He sailed almost directly SOUTH to the port of Gomera in the Canary Islands. There, he picked up extra water.
Then he headed West from Sept.9 to October 7.
Then his course changed to WSW, but mostly southwest until he discovered "San Salvador" a small island, on Oct 12. (disputed to this day, possibly Watlings Island which is farther SOUTH.
Then he and his crew sailed farther and farther SOUTH finally discovering more islands, stopping at Cuba.
After Cuba, his 3 ships continued EAST making landings on Hispaniola, (Dominican Republic today).
January 16, his two remaing ships sail EAST to return home to Spain ASAP.
Think about it people, if he had traveled west from Spain, he would have discovered.... Washington, DC.
PS. even after 4 voyages Columbus was reluctant to admit that it was not the"Indies" that he found. It is called the West Indies to this day. "The New World" was used, but it was a map maker called Amerigo Vespusci that created the name "America". Whew, we could have been called "Vespusci-land"!!?
