It really depends on your body, as others have said... different people metabolize caffeine differently. You'll just have to experiment and see what works (or doesn't) work for you.

A couple of things to think about, though -- drinking coffee on an empty stomach will cause it to be absorbed more quickly, and the effects to seem stronger, than if you have some food in your system when you drink it. Also, you'll want to consider that coffee will cause you to need to urinate much more than normal (it causes your body to flush out all excess water in your bloodstream, and it also physically irritates the lining of the bladder) -- and so, unless your bladder is *really* strong, drinking coffee too late in the evening may result in needing to get up to visit the bathroom one or more times during the night, which can also affect the quality of your sleep. Even if you don't wake up to urinate, trying to sleep through the night with a really full bladder can make some people toss and turn a lot, and "hover" near wakefulness so you never quite get to the most restful deep sleep cycles... just something to think about.

Good question. You cannot put the effects of coffee on humans into a rule unfortunately. All coffee drinkers will tell you that they can sleep quite easily thank you very much, and this is even if they just drank the last gulp pf their favorite relaxation expresso.
On the other hand, Miss other person who may drink an occasional coffee here and there will still be awake at 2 in the morning because she drank a wee cup at 5:30 PM the day before.

You have to see how coffee as a stimulant affects you. Coffee comes in different strengths. Try the one you will use. If you really have to drink some on a dinner, simply ask for decaf (decaffeinated). Problem solved.

I have the same issue... I rise at 5:30 or so five days a week, and usually don't wake up mentally until some time after 2 in the afternoon. I've noticed that music helps to keep me at least focused enough to do my job and function. As for the night when I can't sleep, maybe try to exercise either first thing in the morning (like what I did this morning --experimentation time), or exercise a few hours before your allotted bedtime. That way, it'll allow your metabolism to wind down sufficiently. Good luck.

Everyone's different.

I used to be able to drink espresso and go right to sleep. Nowadays if I have a cup of coffee after about 3-4 PM I have trouble sleeping that night.

Depends on how much caffeine you are used to.

It truly depends on how much of a tolerance your body has built up against caffeine. I have a few friends that must have coffee after dinner and have no problem sleeping at night.

For me, noon is the limit. I read somewhere that human body takes approximately 12 hours to digest 50% of the caffine. (I don't know how accurate this data is)

The typical uptime from caffine is 4-6 hours. It also depends on how much you consume.
