Okay, you can't just join up and find out. That's not even how it works. You have to be sponsored and voted in by the elder members.
Some of our Nation's most respected President's were Freemasons. They believe first in God, Country and Family and then their beliefs. I am a girl so I don't know a whole lot, except that they have some pretty strong beliefs that are pretty secretive.
People are nosy and make up things about everyone who has secrets, and say that they are automatically a cult or something. This is absolutely not the case. You could learn alot by reading a book sold at the book store, called Freemasons for dummies.
They are grouped with the shriners and do many many fine works for the public and for the children in our communities. They have hospitals and burn units all over the country, always non-profit, and usually at no cost to the patients.
From what I understand, they are all (Masons, Shriners etc.) an offspring of the Knights Templers. They, in ancient times were the Knights who were put in power by the Pope to protect Jerusalem at all costs. Later they recieved special permission from the Pope to take charge of Banking. They had the Great International Bank of the middle ages. They were executed by the King of France (Phillip IV), who luckily was unable to kill them all before all the KING's HELPERS kidnapped the Pope.
I think they have a fascinating and outstanding history. Many freemasons were involved in the signing of our Declaration of Independence. That was not a joke made for Hollywood. There were actually several who signed it.

Regular Freemasonry requires that its candidates believe in a Supreme Being, but the interpretation of the term is subject to the conscience of the candidate. This means that men from a wide range of faiths, including (but not limited to) Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism, etc. can and have become Masons. The history of Philippine Masonry may be likened to the history of the first Grand Lodge. On the Feast of St. John the Baptist in 1717, four of the pre-existing Masonic lodges in Great Britain organized what became the first Grand Lodge of the world. On December 19, 1912, three lodges that were chartered under the Constitution of the Grand Lodge of California finally succeeded in establishing the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippine Islands, the forerunner of what is now officially known as the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines. Freemasonry is not a secret society, but lodge meetings, like meetings of many other social and professional associations, are private occasions open only to members. Freemasons are encouraged to speak openly about their membership, while remembering that they undertake not to use it for their own or anyone else's advancement. As members are sometimes the subject of discrimination which may adversely affect their employment or other aspects of their lives, some Freemasons are understandably reticent about discussing their membership. In common with many other national organizations, the Grand Lodge neither maintains nor publishes a list of members and will not disclose names or member's details without their permission.

No, that is just rubbish. It is a lie that originated in 19th century France by a guy who published a few books to embarrass the Catholic Church. He later publically admitted that he made everything up, but poorly researched "Christian" writers keep dredging up his works to "prove" that Masonry is Satanic. It's all a bunch of garbage, but they are not skilled enough to know that they are still being duped by that 19th century Frenchman.
EDIT: The writer's name was Leo Taxil and on 19 April 1897, he publically admitted that his hoax was an elaborately constructed ruse to embarrass the Catholic church. He made TONS of money with his little joke.

No, but many would have you believe that. They have been demonized for centuries. My grandfather was a freemason and also a Christian. Since he was an advanced level (and we weren't even allowed to know which, given the amount of hatred toward them then), I doubt very much that he would have attended church if he had been.

On the contrary. History and religion are prominent in Freemasonry. Many historical figures were Masons, such as George Washington and Pressident Gerald Ford to name a few.
