I have a car I have not driven in some time now. I occasionally - like monthly - start it but this last ime it was no go. Running jumpers so the spark was there and it wanted to start with a bit of ether but would not keep on. So I'm thinking the fuel has maybe turned to sludge? Any other possible causes and what do you if it is sludge in the fuel?

1) Pull all of the plugs.
2) Disable the ignition to avoid unpleasantness like fires and damaged igniters.
3) Crank the engine over several times, for 5 - 10 seconds each time with your foot on the throttle all the way (if fuel injected).
All of the above will help to clear out old excess fuel in the cylinders.
4) Replace the plugs with new or clean the old ones and dry them with either.
5) Enable the ignition and try to start the car.

If it will start, let it run for a good long time. Allow it to clear the excess fuel that has accumulated and not been consumed. Allow it to run for at least 30 minutes after it reaches normal temperature.

All the above is predicated on the assumption that all ignition is sound, no moisture in the cap, wires are secure etc.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas

Sounds like you gasoline has gone stale. loosen your fuel line at the carb a little and smell the gas. If it smells like turpentine, you will need to drain your gas tank and put new fuel in it.

i own a repair shop, and if its old fuel causing it not to start you,ll need to get it all out of there,i have found the best way to do this is just siphon,it all out as good as you can,,then drop the tank off of it,and clean it all out real good to make sure you got all of it out,,and fill it back with good fuel,,this should help it a lot,and it my need a new set of plugs also ,because the old fuel may have gotten on them, and it causes them to foul out,,but this is usually what i have to do to get one going good after cleaning them out,,good luck,i hope this help,s.

if its gasoline it will not sludge, it can go stale and varnish. maybe youre not giving it enough time to build up adequate fuel pressure.
