South Asia, to be precise. Many things cause one to be misled:
(1)people from that general area do not easily resemble Southeast or East Asians, and historically were once considered members of the British Empire
(2) a proximity to Middle Eastern countries, China, and even a traceable landlink to Africa (by the Suez canal), if you follow a map far enough
(3) The very word 'Indian' causes confusion as to whether it means 'Person from India' or 'Native American Tribe Member'.

Asia, although you'll often hear about the Indian "sub-continent," which is not actually a separate entity.

Yes, it is a sub-continent, but technically, it's Asia.

Asia. India's West of Nepal and China, and East of Pakistan. It is
south and South-West of China. It is North of the Indian ocean and Sri Lanka is off its coast.
