As a black student, which would you prefer to attend? Why?

well, I'm a black student and I attended both. I did my first two years at Prairie View A&M University (www.pvamu.edu) and my last two years at Texas A&M-Commerce (www.tamu-commerce.edu).

Both of them have advantages and disadvantages. At PV, all of the students looked like me. This was comforting, but at the same time it didn't force me to go outside of my comfort zone and challenge my pre-conceived notions of other cultural groups. Also, we had a problem with people who didn't come for the education but rather the social experience and they brought some of their bad habits (violent tendencies, gang cultural, etc.) The school was pretty good about putting them out, but it's sad that they would do that rather than try to get an education when there are so many people who can't afford to attend a four year university.

At A&M-Commerce, very few of the students look like me, and it can be kind of isolating, especially since I transferred in after everyone had formed their cliques. The frats and sororities are radically different from those at my HBCU. I don't get out as much because I don't have as much in common with my fellow students. However, I really like being exposed to other cultures. I get alot of questions that start out like " Can I ask you a question without you getting offended?" and I ask my fair share as well.

So yeah, both were really good for both my academic and cultural education.

neither...i wouldn't want to be surrounded by just one racial group...i mean yes i wud feel more comfortable around my race, but i wud prefer to be around a mix of cultures since that is what the world is comprised of...there's a lot that can be learned from different cultures and u can't just learn it in a classroom.
