I asked my doctor at my last appointment. And she told me that it's possible to check urself to see if ur dilating...she told me the ovious things wash ur hands wear gloves bla bla...now im not just doing this for the hell of it. I have been having contractions very very strong off and on for a while so its helpful for me. the thing is im not sure what to look for...i would exspect to feel a slit if i was dilating? is that right? And one more thing..sry if this is too much info, but what would a slightly hard thing that is rounded and can be slightly pushed back be? thats not the head is it??? or if that just my cervix?

Okay all i know is that the slightly hard thingy is your cervix.

Now, for everyone else... Just because you are dilated and having contractions does not mean you are in active labor and the baby is coming. I have been at 1 1/2 centemeters dilated for 2 weeks now, with contractions, and my doctor has assured me that it is perfectly normal. You could go to the hospital but all they will tell you is to come back when you arehaving contractions every 5 minutes for an hour or more, so this really does you no good except wasting about 3 hours of your time.

Try asking your O.B. for tips on your next appointment.

Sounds like your cervix, its still green and fully effaced....instead of typing or checking your dialation progress get up and walk...that will help thin your cervix so you can start dialating. It will increase your labor. The purpose of labor pains are to thin and dialate the cervix...it may seem like they' re coming hard now and they may hurt...but girlfriend you ain' t felt nothin' yet.....oh be sure your well hydrated, if you are dehydrated they won' t let you have an epideral. Epideral is a pregnant woman' s best friend!
Good luck and have a safe delivery and a healthy baby! congrats!!

If you think you're dilating and in labour, you should go to hospital. Do not trust people on the internet with stuff like this!

Good luck for your birth and motherhood :)

watch what you are doing, you can rupture your membranes prematurely. how many weeks are you? and if your membranes are already ruptured it is not a good idea to go sticking your hands, even with gloves, in there. you can introduce an infection and cause all kinds of problems. best just to let curiosity go and wait for the doc or nurse to check ya. good luck

That hard thing you're feeling is your cervix. If you can get one finger in a space there, you are 2cm dilated. For every finger, it's approx. 2cm.

Good luck and I hope everything goes well for you!
