Don't ask questions at petco. Petco knows NOTHING about fish except how to sell. I would say that in front of Walmart, Petco is the worst for fish care and fish advice.

The problem is that you have 2 fish in a 1 gallon tank! 1 gallon tank is barely suitable for a betta fish, and nothing else, and this is why so many fish die.

Any other fish needs to go in a larger tank. Do you know what kind of fish you have? Do you know how big they'll be as adults? You'll probably need at least a 10gallon tank.

Try getting a bigger tank, with a proper filter, heater, and properly cycle your tank (please read: http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/article2.php )

Good luck with your fishes! Please consult fishforums.com in the future, and don't ask Petco. They suck.. lol

In the meantime, try feeding some better food, like frozen bloodworms or brineshrimp. Clean the water EVERY DAY. I'm guessing you don't have a filter, right? Replace half the water in your tank every day, or the ammonia will build up and kill your fish. If you don't have any, put some plants (plastic ones) for the fish to feel secure in.

A 10 gallon aquarium with a sponge filter (they are simple inexpensive and good bio filters, especially for small fish) would make a good starter aquarium. You want to set up your aquarium and allow the nitrogen cycle to “kick in”. This can be achieved easily by adding gravel or filter media from an established healthy aquarium. Or you can add small amounts of food to stimulate the growth of aerobic bacteria for this process.
Back to your main question, what you feed makes a difference, many popular fish foods such as TetraMin are high in cereal (which is a poor source of energy in fish- unlike humans), and low in usable quality aquatic based proteins. I would suggest a food such as Spirulina 20 which is high in usable proteins such as Whole fish meal (as opposed to plain fish meal, which is just fish remnants leftover from human food processing), this food also contains spirulina algae which is an excellent source of aquatic proteins and vegetable matter, especially for young fish.

well i have worked with pets (volunteered) and i know alot about fish, and i can tell you that theres not a good chance that the other will show it how to each since they are the same species right??? and maybe you should try seperating it if it still continous not eating.
and maybe try crush up the food or use liquid foods for it to eat.
