Most network connection (especially at work) block the tcp/ip ports used by popular IM programs. However try http://www.meebo.com. This is a browser based front end to AIM, Yahoo as well as MSN. Should work across firewalls as it only uses port 80, which is always open.

My yahoo mess works fine thru my network! If you are on a work or school network dont bother to try, they will all be blocked!

It has plugins for chatting over people on the same networks.
All you need is to know their IP number.
