Start with Vienna which is a charming city with plenty of tourist attractions. Then visit Salzburg and other smaller cities. On the whole Austria is a tourists delight. If you know a little german it would help get around. People are amazingly honest. Its still one of the few places in the world where nobody checks if you bought your ticket for a concert or opera. Its assumed you have bought your ticket if you go in and take a seat. Such is the honesty of the people there.

If you are not "dead-set" on Austria, I would HIGHLY recommend The Czech Republic. The country is beautiful and loaded with castles, skiing, hiking, big cities, small villages, modern conveniences, ancient relics. And the cost is WAY lower in Cz than in Austria. Prague is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. Vienna is super too, but WAY more expensive!
Just my 2 cents.

Airfare in Europe is very very cheap. You can fly from almost anywhere to almost anywhere for about $50. Fly to London, the cheapest from the USA, and then take Easy Jet to where ever you want to go. You'll save big bucks over flying straight to Austria.

Start in Vienna. If you can rent-a-car, you'll find that Austria is so small, you can drive to a different location every day, see things and then go back to Vienna.
