Good question- I think everyone comes to the conclusion that life is tough at some point in their life. When I was a child, I remember hearing the quote (forgot who said it) that goes something like, "isn't it unfair that you didn't ask to be born, but here you are" at the time, I didn't get it, and thought why would anyone think this, but now I do. You're born into your life without having any free will or say about it, whether born into lucky or unfortunate circumstances, but you've just got to do the best you can--
I think the first time I really faced the 'stung' of life was when I was in college and found I was on my own, away from the comfort of the life I knew- my family and friends back home. It was a scary realization for me of sorts that I had to truly grow up and try to become an adult

I've known about the real, ugly, hard side of life since I was a teenager and accidently saw a huge hole in the muscle mass of a classmate. He was a sickly child (not sickly when I knew him) and his mother threw him through a wall. I don't know that you ever recover from that, but I began a career in the services profession to help stop those kind of atrocities.

What a great question! Personal, but good. I was twelve, and I think it hits kids if they are vulnerable and no one is there to protect them. It's like a turtle crawling out of his shell into the world, only to realize the shell has protected him the entire time, and now its nowhere to be found. It is a loss of innocence, and it sucks, but its all about life. Recovering from that loss is to have compassion for yourself, for others, and learn to forgive, and become your own protector.

Ugly, hard side of life? What could you possibly mean by that?
