i dont think anyone can totally not let things hurt them. i think the key to success to living a simple and happy life is to accept what happens to them and the feelings that go along with these experiences, and let themselves feel and grief whatever hard situation comes their way. and learn from these hard experiences.

I like Sonny's answer; however, here's mine:
It is a choice. We all start out with nothing. Those who gain the most, lose the most. We all lose everything...the ones we love, our possessions...everything, except our experiences. We can change our perception from a losing game to one of gaining wonderful friends and times that will never be taken from us, once done, its ours...good or bad (that depends on you). However, without being hurt??? Quoting or paraphrasing Captain James T. Kirk (well, whoever wrote the line), "I don't want you to take my pain from me. My pain is what makes me who I am. I don't want to know what would have happened if I had gone right when I chose to go left. My pain defines me. I need my pain."
We learn the most, and best, in the face of adversity. Don't you think? It really forces us to think about many things. Watch for what you're wishing for. It might not serve you as well as you might perceive.

Choose friends who have a common interest in a games or crafts or something. Best if most of the group is one sex or mostly one sex. Also have the dibs rule about the opposite sex, call dibs on a guy or chick, and you get a week to hit on them. this way there is no drama about people hooking up, or drama where people don't get invited, or drama about people not wanting to do something the group is doing.

Remember, that more often than not, when someone does something that hurts you, it is about them and not about you. Happy people do not hurt other people unless quite accidently. Then they offer a SINCERE apology and you both can move on.
Someone who really doesn't care if they hurt you isn't worth your time or effort or tears.

By being positive, everyone gets hurt but it is how we deal with it. one can retaliate, or just shrug your shoulders and put it down to expeirience. Why come down to their level? if you did you would be as bad as they are. Laughter is another great asset in life and it's also contagious, if more people laughed then this world would surely be a happier place.

Acceptance of others opinions and of your various situations is a start. Strive every day to know yourself and not forget the things you love. When one sees how short life is, others negative opinions mean less and less. Good luck!
