in shakspears play romeo and juliet in act 1 scene 5 they fall instantly in love at lord capulets party. but why?

They instantly recognized each other as their perfect "type". Once that happened they were drawn irresistibly. You see, hidden in the heart & mind is a clear knowledge of what really "turns on" each person. Romeo was her ideal and Juliet was his. They couldn't help but feel the love.

Why? Why do people ever fall in love? Franco Zefirelli would have us believe it was because they were both exquisitely beautiful young people who simply could not resist what Mother Nature demanded. I think that was basically Shakespeare's idea, too.

I do think Zefirelli's 1968 film is the definitive work on the subject: Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting are believably irresistible.

I guess Shakespeare is writing about the whole concept of "love at first sight." I used to believe in it but not so much anymore. It's just a nice (but tragic) story. That's what fiction is all about, something that is unreal.

Its called love at first site and the attraction is that he couldn't have her. People have a tendency to want what they cant have.
