Be careful about thieves/pickpockets, particularly if you are off your face. But generally it's one of the safest cities in Europe. Well policed, but not heavily so - the rozzers are pretty friendly and cheery.
The sex industry is very well regulated in Amsterdam. Your STD risk is low because the women insist on condoms. And yes, they are required to have regular health checks.
You can expect a fairly standard s*ck and f*ck at a reasonable price (50 euro).

RLD, known as DE WALLETJES is not too far from the train station. It's worth to have a walk through an night. You Will see the girls behind a show case-like glass. It's not a good experience to be with this girls, for they after two minutes Will tell you to hurry unless you give them more money. A better choice is to get in a bar at the zone, most girls sitting at the bar are available. Anyway, you will have fun

It's generally safe as long as you act sensibly - don't walk down dark alleys late at night, don't get so drunk or stoned you can't look after yourself, avoid catching the eye of dodgy-looking characters, and don't be tempted to buy drugs from the street dealers. Pick-pocketing is relatively common but there is very little violent crime - I've been there many times and never seen so much as an argument. It's worth carrying some low-value coins to fob off beggars with.
The window girls are tested for STDs regularly. They normally insist you wear a condom before they will lay so much as a finger on you, but on very rare occasions they might offer unprotected s*x if they think you are a safe prospect - this happened to a friend of mine. Don't try to take photos of them, the pimps can be quite forceful about this.
If you haven't been before, Casa Rosso is the best of the 'theatrical' shows but avoid the Bananenbar - it's very overpriced for what you get.

The first time i went i found it quite intimidating, all the pimps are on the streets but at the end of the day they are just looking after their girls. If you don't cause trouble and whatever you do, do NOT take photos, they leave you alone.
All the girls are checked every couple of weeks for STDs.
None of our groups in the last 4 years have had anything robbed or been attacked or anything, its generally a safe place. Just dont get too drunk and fall in the canals, i hear its pretty cold.

Some what, there is a lot of street crime there, I was stationed there for 4 years. More crime then normal. Stay on the main streets and in groups. All girls are tested regularly at least the legal ones are it is the law.

RLD Amsterdam is a safe area, no worries. Taking pictures is not a good idea. The girls are regularly checked, and clients must use a condom anyway....... just like in all bigger cities: watch out for the pickpockets.........

dont try taking photos with your camera in the RLD. they dont like that.(thats what i heard anyways) you may attract attention and some street crime of your own.
- the window girls may have tests done regularly, but just remember not all them girls are actually girls. (heard that too) so just to be safe look for visual signs of adams apple, dirty fingernails- and oh, i nearly forgot - hairy a.r.s.e before laying down your hard earned hooker money~

I think you have to be careful when you go to Amsterdam, watch your wallet!! But you don't have to be worried that something bad will happen to you, it's just like any other big city. The women in who work in the red light district have to be tested for STD's as far as I know but I think men are requierd to use protection.
