What size tank is it, and what fish do you have? If you have too many fish in too small a tank, then it will get dirty much more quickly.
Also, are you sure you aren't overfeeding? It's easy to do... just be sure not to feed more than twice a day, and not more than they can eat in 2 minutes.
Do sure to do weekly water changes of about 20-30%, and vacuum the gravel. Do water changes every other day until the wate clears.
No, you can't let the water get dirty. Dirty water means high ammonia levels, and ammonia is toxic. It is not good for your fish.
An algae eater will NOT solve your problem in this case. Get a better filter. What kind of filter do you currently have? If it's an undergravel filter, it's useless. Get a hang off the back filter. Aqua Clear is a great brand. Get a filter rated for 20 gallons more than whatever your tank is. So, if you have a 10gallon tank, get a filter for 30 gallons.
Also look at your stocking levels. Make sure you don't have too many fish, or too big fish, or fish that make a lot of waste. Fancy Goldfish, for example, are poop machines. They need 20 gallons each.

If you keep your aquarium in direct sunlight or even sometimes in indirect sunlight it causes algae and bacteria to grow a lot faster than usual. They do make certain chemicals that can be added to the tank to keep the water clear but before that I would check the water, make sure that it isn't in sunlight and do weekly water changes. Be sure to only change about 10-20% of the water at a time. Also, like the other answers stated...make sure that you have a filter that is strong and the right size for your tank. Good luck!

is the tank near a window? because it can be the sunlight that makes algae in the water and therefore it is cloudy, but if it isnt i suggest you use a different type of food like pellets ( many sized pellets available for different fish sizes.)

Do you have a strong filter? If you don't, buy one. You'd be surprised how big a difference a good filter makes. If you do have a filter, make sure the cartridges aren't dirty. They can be replaced.
