I was having a similar issue and have been a loyal IE user for years. I just made the switch a couple of days ago to Firefox and I love it. It is faster, has more features and better security. I suggest giving it a try, and you could always go back and try to fix IE if you don't like Firefox.

I heartily agree that you should dump Internet Explorer like a diseased hamburger. It is the only "major" browser that doesn't comply with official and widely accepted Web standards, and even with the release of version 7 (the shill above notwithstanding), is undoubtedly not the most secure browser available. To use Internet Explorer is to bring compatibility and security issues upon yourself unnecessarily. (Don't get me started on Windows as a whole.)

While not the only alternative, Firefox is probably one of the best. However, if your computer is simply old and slow, there may be very little you can do to speed things up short of upgrading your hardware.

If you still run on XP (any edition) or lower OS, you probably have
have IE6 or lower. I suggest you get IE7, it not only looks cool, but it speeds up your internet ten fold! Even if you subscribed to some mediocre hi-speed internet service! To get Internet Explorer 7, I could give you so many links to get it, but here's my fave one: http://www.microsoft.com/
I'm not sure about the site's exact link to IE7, but this is the best place to get it!
Your slowdown can also depend your subscribed internet server,
your PC's proxy setting, or the Hz on your PC
If your PC's drive speed is in the mHz range, then that's the problem. If it's around 2 gHz, then it's one of the problems above.
