Life is full of many material and tangible things, but what about things such as love or hate? These are things that cannot be truly defined by science, yet they can be more powerful than anything that one can see, or touch. Without love, and hate, we would be as robots, existing for nothing......yet for some reason, our lives seem to be guided by these mystical emotions that we cannot explain? Do you think love was an accident of nature?

I'm not asking whether we fall in love, or hate someone on purpose or not.......I want to know if you think these incredible emotions originated from some type of matter floating around in space when our exsistance first came to be.....which would be concidered an accident of nature...... Or do you believe that it would be impossible for something so mystifying to evolve from a rock?

Ok, yes.......it's obvious where I stand on this issue.
I guess answers aren't really my main concern here.....just want people to think about it....

My thoughts concerning natural selection.

In order for life to prevail, the theory natural selection weeds out the bad and selects and maintains those which basically strengthen life....or something like that...right? If emotions such as love and hate, along with many others were naturally selected by nature for life to prevail, where did nature find such things to select in the first place? I don't think that theory explains what I'm asking.......It may explain a reason "for" the emotions, but not a reason where they came from....

No, I don't- and neither do you, judging by your nickname... interesting question. My conviction is we were created in the image of God- therefore, all of our emotions- love included- are some reflection of His own...

In the beginning, the question of "love" was never meant to be anything other than a purely physical attraction, a possibility for reproduction. You ask yourself: “Is this person the best I can find to, along with me, create a being that will be able to advance the survival of the species?”

The emotions that can grow from time spent with and appreciation for a person evolve into respect and admiration. When that feeling becomes adoration the recipient can never stand up to the expectations and "love" becomes heartbreak and the basis for romance novels, a song, a woman scorned, broken dreams and baggage, all of which are asking the question: “What is the origin of “love”?

Love and hate have been defined by science. The products of natural selection are not accidents. Obviously, you are some kind of mystic in need of a scientific education. You misconstrue evolutionary theory completely. There is a big difference between an accident and a random event. Very ill posed question!

I've asked this question of people before too but in this case you have worded it in such a way that I feel you may be asking this to start a discussion rather than find an answer which I believe you already know.

In any event, I believe it is not possible for love to emanate from something which is stupid. I think the very existence of love is one of the stronger arguments for the existence of God. If we were to use pure evolutionary theory, survival of the fittest, natural selection etc. there would be very little room for love I believe. It would be more efficient to stomp on the one who got in your way. Along with love I would include intelligence, quality, creativity and beauty to name a few, as other things which have their root in a first cause which possesses all these traits ultimately.

Love is not an "accident", but it certainly wasn't created on purpose. Love evolved, much the same way we did. Love provides a distinct advatage in the care of offspring. Humans have very few offspring at a time, and relatively few in their lifetime. If love can make us fiercely protective of our offspring it gives us a better chance of protecting them, either through fighting or scaring away a potential predator. It is strong because it has to override our mental processes. We love because it gives us pleasure, and through that pleasure our species has a survival advantage.
