I was curious on how much you have to donate to get in to a top school, say University of Michigan or Notre Dame? $1 million, $50,000, $20 million?....
And how would you go about asking the school about the donation? Do you ask straightforward or kind of hint it?

No reputable college or university will offer admission for a donation. In fact, if you indicate that you will give a large donation in order to be admitted, your chances for admission will be nil..

Unless your family has a legacy at the institution (and even if then), it is not at all advisable to even hint at offering a donation to get into a school. If a family member is a trustee or donates a library or something, then realistically the admissions office will face heavy pressure to admit the candidate. On the other hand, I have known of people who have broadly "hinted" at a couple of Ivy Leage institutions that a large donation may be coming if a favored candidate is admitted. The institutions chose not to pick up on the hint, most likely in order to maintain their credibility as reputable schools. Good grades and a strong application package are definitely more reliable (and honorable) means of gaining acceptance to a top college.
