Why are New York City cabs yellow?

Believe it or not it is to help them stand out in traffic. I`ve heard that in New York that it is a law that taxis must be yellow to set them apart from other vehicles. Also in a time of disaster cab can be used to help evacuate people and being yellow helps keep the prosess moving easily.
