Neptune is what, 2 or 3 billion miles away? A light year is 6 trillion miles, so the distance is less than .001 light years. Light years are practical only when measuring interstellar distances.

First let's set all the numbers on the table...

Neptune is about 4.5 billion kilometers from the sun. The Earth is about 152 million kilometers from the sun. And of course they might at any particular moment be on the same or different sides. But assuming they're pretty near that's about 4.38 billion kilometers between them.

A light year is about 9.46 trillion kilometers. So that's 0.00046 light years.

Of course, there's no reason we have to use light-YEARS. How about light-minutes? A light-minute is only 18 million kilometers. That puts the Earth about 8.4 light-minutes from the sun, and 243 light-minutes between Earth and Neptune. Much more manageable!

a light year is the distance light travels in one year which is 186000 miles per second x 3600 seconds in a day x 365 days in a year.neptune is 2 billion miles away so divide 2 billion by 186000

You wouldn't measure that in light years. It would only be a small percentage of one light year.

Not even one. Just a bunch of light minutes.
