my hypothesis based on my very limited observation is that light skinned people are more dominating and are more higher in social class. i dunno. in the place where i live, most people respect light skinned more because they treat people with more respect. not saying all dark skinned people, but just as a general statement in my area, dark skinned people tend to be less civilized and more likely to disrespect another.

History is the cause of this.
The Greek Emporer Constantine has much to do with this. Greeks became the worlds first race haters due there earlier world conquering.
Anyway, Constantine instructed Michael Angilo to paint all pictures of Jesus as being a white man. Since then, it gives the illusion that whites are closer to God and the lighter you are the closer to him you are and the nicer people treat you. White is associated to anything good or pure. Black is associated to anything negative or unpure!
I am not saying that is the thinking of all people, but in a nutshell that is the way it developed.

The answer is very simple: 1.) Racism 2.) Insecure about who they are 3.) Racism exsists in families where there are light skinned and dark skinned relatives, even though they share the same grandparents or great-grand parents, who maybe of African decent.
To help yourself know your own history! Skin color is genetic.

I heard somewhere that ppl (usually white ppl) would treat a lighter child better than a darker child because they can see themselves in the lighter child. I'm not sure how true that is or (if it's true) if it's a concious effort. But I know what you're talking about.

There are many misconceptions about the darker skinned, and they're afraid of them occassionally. It's simply a matter of comfort.

GREAT question.Im half black half irish and light skinned myself.People also confuse me as being white(mariah carey or wentworth miller).People always ask me if I was adopted.I hate that stuff. My skin is pretty white though.Sometimes I feel like that many black people(99.9%)won't accept me for who I am.

It has nothing to do with you being "better" it is just plain ignorance on their part. That's really all is there to be said about this question.
