Strikers, or the midfielders at the front... because really, football/soccer games and statistics are basically all about how many times you score, and that's what strikers and those midfielders do. They sort of become "heroes" after they score and contribute to a team's victory, so they are often remembered for that.
At least there are figures concerning how many saves a goalkeeper has done in his/her career, but for defenders, there isn't much to say about how many times they managed to keep the ball away from the goal, for example.

i think it is the striker..because first the best way to defend is to attack..and it is the attacker who make the team wins or loses..if a team focuses on defend only it is gonna end 0-0 ..but if the team combines between attack and defend the team will win..A team with out attack will either lose or draw on the otherhand the team with with attack defend and good midfield wins the game..so it is the strikers who get more remembered..forexample..lets take pele...what made pele so popular,,it is all the goals he scored in his career which is 1281 goals in 1363 matches..by far the most goals ever scored by a single player in his entire career..

It doesnt always have to be about the forwards. I believe it's whoever makes the biggest impression on a team, by either scoring, assisting, or even saving.

good question but all positions have remebered players, but if i was to chose one it would be striker because people care about goals these days.

The ones that are scoring goals..... Beckenbauer and R.Carlos are the best defenders of all time because they were scoring goals!!!!!!

Just because a great pass would be given less importance than an easy goal , a great save or shoot would be given lesser importance than a goal . thats the fact .
