If you will ignore the complex words, it all boils down to this. our island have plenty of potatoes tbis year. The island in front of us, I heard that they have plenty of pigs and the thier neighbor has coffee. Let us trade some of the potatoes for pigs and coffee.
We have been doing early commerce like this , and it is called bartering. Soon after that , we traded with currency, debts and other forms of payment.

Today, we have well established laws and models of commercial trading of goods and jobs all over the world.

We are in the process of grappling with international trade rules and laws to govern trade via internet.

If I'm right, one of the reasons we engage in commerce is that most of the U.S.'s manufacturing jobs have gone offshore, especially to China. If we didn't engage in commerce, there would be precious little stuff in our stores. We do actually export a few things as well - services more than goods.
