Thinking of the potato answer, you may be interested to know that he went to high school in Rigby, Idaho, where there are a lot of potatos.

At one point in his life, he made the intellectual leap that has brought us the point where most of us don't listen to the radio for entertainment dramas anymore... like we used to in the "good old days". Ole' Philo had a number of patent battles with the folks at RCA, among others, when he rightly claimed royalties on the system of electronic television we used for over half a century, before HD TV.

He's the celebrated inventor of the TV set. He did a lot of research into other curious properties of vacuum tubes and bigger vacuum chambers, and invented a system (the "fusor")that could produce nuclear fusion for brief periods of time.
