Large tax breaks for the wealthy, subsidies and tax breaks for corporations who send jobs oversees and the war in Iraq are the most to blame.

Well, after the surplus that Clinton had and Bush inherited, we ended up cutting taxes, increasing spending and had less revenue due to the recession.
9/11 Hurt us,
The war didn't help things either
Katrina didn't help either (we're spending money to rebuild etc.)
Tax cuts went to everybody btw--
The jokers in congress the last few sessions have not been fiscal conservatives, they're social conservatives.
The surplus Clinton had was due to his working with a more fiscally conservative congress and pay as you go rules.

Can't you libs be honest, even a little?
Clinton's "surplus" was on paper only. Enhanced through dishonest bookkeeping practices. The economy was on the down slide when Clinton was in charge. The economy went down and the deficit went up as a result of Clinton's failed economic policies.
911 was the biggest cause of the deficit. Rebuilding the military that Clinton decimated cost a lot.
The tax cuts cost very little, and they went to the people who paid the most taxes. Those tax cuts have resulted in a stronger economy and more tax revenue coming in.
The major cause of the deficit was the over spending Congress. Both republican and democrat.
To say it's all Bush's fault, or the republicans, is just a dim witted lie.

These "neo-cons" are not fiscal conservatives, except for remnants of "trickle down" economics. They have cut taxes for the wealthy, but have increased spending, just in areas different from where Liberals would increase spending (military and business subsidies vs. social programs). The bogus war has a lot to do with it as well, which turned into huge business subsidies for Haliburton and other contractors.

With over $400 billion in deficit this year and for years to come, how do they pay for that deficit? First, by taking the Social Security surplus that comes in every month and endorsing the checks of working people over to me to pay for the tax cuts. But it's not enough. So they have to go borrow money. Most of it they borrow from the Chinese and Japanese governments. Sure, these countries are competing with us for good jobs, but how can we enforce our trade laws against our bankers? I mean, come on!
Cutting the deficit further until we balance the budget is vital to our future. The burden of this deficit drags us down today and jeopardizes our children’s future tomorrow. Lowering it brings interest rates down so more Americans can buy homes and cars, start businesses, go to college, and build a better future for themselves and their families.

They're not fiscal conservatives! As a fiscal conservative, I detest what they have done to the economy, they actually expanded the government and raised the debt. They're social conservatives and fiscal liberals, that is what they are.

We sent the Republicans to Washington to change Washington and Washington changed the Republicans. This last election was the wake up call they needed.
Bush has cut the deficit in half since the start of the war. It was much higher. It did go up during his admin, but he has cut it in half now. Google national debt.

Don't feel so bad, you're not the first nor the last to answer your own question. When Bush first took office there wasn't any debt. I'm wondering where he's getting all of this money, it sure isn't coming out of his pocket.

If we can get people in office who will stop making war, and reduce the size and influence of the government, give more power to the people and the states we would be better off. I am neither Rep. or Dem. but the current administration has got us into a mess.

The senseless war and huge tax cuts. It has been said that this war is for the oil in Iraq. Well, we got ripped off it that's the case. With what this war has cost in dollars, not to mention the loss of human life, we could have spent that money on wind and solar energy and become completely free of our dependence on oil producing countries for ever.

Non-defense spending has gone up considerably in the last 6 years as well.
I guess many of those right wingers only pay lip service to fiscal conservatism....
