hon you have 4 more weeks before you need to worry about not dilating and needing a c-section! normal gestation is 38-42 weeks (not just till 40 weeks) and you may not start dilating until your labor starts :)

just be patient

Don't worry. Just because you're at 38 weeks and haven't started dilating doesn't mean you'll have to be induced or have a c-section. With my first, I made it all the way to my 40 week appointment with no dilation at all. That very night, I went into labor. Was in labor for 6 hours before we went to the hospital. Got there and still had not begun dilating. After hour 8, I was at 1 cm. So there was no bloody show for me. It took a total of 12 hours to reach the 4cm mark and get the epidural. The entire labor was about 20 hours, but was great after the epidural.

As for tips to get started dilating, I've heard walking and sex would do it. I tried both of those and neither worked for me.

best of luck to you.

regards,
mari

The rumor is, there's things you can try to get labor started. The ones I've heard are sex, nipple stimulation, and WALKING! When I was finally starting to dilate I walked as much as I possibly could and let gravity do the rest! I would, however, talk to your OB to make sure, especially if this has been a difficult pregnancy. Also take into consideration that you're really not *due* for 2 more weeks! Good luck!

I wish! They say that having sex helps because semen naturally prepares the cervix to dilate. I tried everything in my first pregnany to dilate, but even being on the stuff they gave me in the hospital for 2 days didn't work. I ended up with a c-section, but I'd been induced so it wasn't a spontaneous delivery. If you can avoid having to be induced that would work in your favor though. Your body will naturally do what it's supposed to as long as you and your doctor are willing to wait until the time is right! I know that's much easier said then done though. Best of luck to you!

I was dialating kind of fast by going up and down stairs a lot.. The doctor told me that I was moving so much that I jus needed to stay put for my last 3 weeks... Try stairs..

I shadowed an OB/Midwife for 4 years and whenever a woman was overdue, she would reccommend primrose oil caplets: 2 by mouth and a 1 in the vagina every day until the baby comes. It softens the cervix. Just make sure you tell your OB because most likely you'll deliver empty caplets along with the baby. lol. You can find them at any pharmacy.

You can have sex often, that will help you dialate, and do lots of walking. But you still have two weeks to go, so don't be to anxious to have your baby. Good Luck

You can do squats and that helps your cervix dilate and efface. Hold the squat as long as you can and push down. Good luck.
