Don't use an animal as a decoration, unless you're going to feed and care for it after.
This is just as bad as letting doves go free - most captive doves that are 'set free' die shortly thereafter because they are unable to survive in the wild.
So, as pretty as bettas are, do not use one at a wedding reception. Such bowls can be tipped, broken, have stuff spilled into them... Go with some purple irises instead.
And do NOT, ever, condone dyed fish by buying them. It's a cruel process, I'm surprised it is even legal.
Read this for details: http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/beginnerinfo/a/paintedfish.htm
Anyway, congratulations, enjoy your big day :)

dyring fish is a very nasty process that kills many of them. The sellers do it before they go to the store to be sold. Basically the tatoo the fish with color. The process harms the fish so much that many of them die from the process right away. Then, the large majority will die within the first few days due to a lowered immune system and then catching other illnesses/parasites. The few that make it are then sold.
Even so, the fish will not keep the unnatural color for the rest of their lives, slowly their body will eliminate it. It is a cruel practice.
There are many online bettas for sale that are high quality and stunning the way they were born. This is the best way to buy a real stunner. I bought s silver and purple betta this way. It is the most gorgeouse fish I have ever had to date.
here is a link that offers many sites to buy from:
http://f.webring.com/hub?ring=bettashops
also try ebay. Certain sellers ship for free. here is their latest:
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=live+betta
You can also do your own search by typing in show quality bettas for sale. I would just like to think you for asking. The others shouldn't have reamed you out. Its important to ask, cause then we can learn. right?

You cant dye a fish on your own...the chemicals would most likely kill it and if it does survive it will probably die from some disease that it couldnt fight off because of its weak immune system....the chemicals are very harsh and all you have to do is to look at the website the people before me posted...
Anyway even if you do find purple bettas, please do think about what your going to do with it afterwards..the person before me has made some good points that you cant expect the guests to just take the bettas...alot of people wont know how to take care of them and the ones that might know...might not even want them...
These fish are living things and should be treated with respect....
Ofcorse it is your choice in the end...but really think about what your about to do.....i wouldnt be happy to be at ur reception if i saw bettas displayed like this...and you can be sure that there will be alot of Guests that will rise up against you on this on ur wedding day!
And the people that offered the advice that you should get bettas from breeders i just want to laugh at that because breeders dont breed these fish so that they can be disposed on wedding days..and the really good bettas are expensive...all in all i really hope you change ur mind about this and just go with purple flowers or something...

Well everyone has answered your question about dyeing a betta fish..
My concern is that if u do find "purple" bettas what are u going to do with them after the reception?
- dont tell me that after the reception anyone who wants them can have them.. or that they will be gifts to all the guests that came to the wedding...because im sure that even you knw that more then 1/2 those people wont even know how to take care of them....or actually care to have one.
Honestly when will people like you learn that animals are living things & NOT FOR decoration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im just really mad after reading this stupid question of yours... i hope u & ur fiancee find some sense and realize that this whole idea of using bettas at ur reception is ridiculous!

No. No. No. That is the most ridiculous and disgusting thing I have ever heard. If someone has ever dyed a beta fish, then they should be arrested for animal cruelty. That is disgusting. Don't dye a beta fish. Let them alone, you can BUY a purple beta fish. Don't you dare abuse those animals, even if they are "just fish."

How rediculous that you want to basically kill a fish because it will look good at a wedding.. When dye is injected into any fish, your basically giving it a short death sentence.. It's not like tattooing humans... its injecting it into their bodies to produce a color... Look up some of the horrible things that happen to that fish after the dye is injected...
Stick to ribbons and flowers or candles and mirrors or something... fish, pets, etc are not centerpieces and should not be given as gifts unless the recipient WANTS to take the responsibility of taking care of it....
I know that if I was invited to a wedding with fish as centerpieces - I would personally leave. I'm not a peta activist or anything of the sort... but I don't feel that pets are toys...

The same way you dye a Rosie.
But I doubt either of you would enjoy it.
BUY a purple fish, don't try to dye one.
If your local fish supplier doesn't have them, find a bigger fish store.
The internet is a wonderful research tool, but I can't post 10,000,000 links here.
And without knowing where you are, it's impossible to narrow the search.

You CAN NOT color dye a fish of any breed. It will KILL them.
You can however, buy purple betas.
Contact a reputable pet store well in advance and see what they can order for you.

That's a neat decoration idea for a wedding reception. But I, too, am fairly sure that it's unhealthy to dye a betta fish and they would die shortly after.
Just make sure kids can't get at them. And the bowls can't get broken.
