Based on his performances in SA, is he in form or out-of-form and why do you think so?

Performance is not the only key. Remember that he is coming at 4/5 down with hardly anything on board and has a huge target to chase with noone else batting.

So?

He seems to be in form.
But the top order collapse brings too much pressure on him.
Also in last 3 games, when he came to bat, India was around 40/4, which doesn't allow him to play his natural game.
The irresponsible batting of top-order shadows Dhoni's performance. In all the three matches, he was the only person from India to get 2 figure score in all games.
So he is obviously in form batsmen

Considering the talent and past performance of Dhoni, he seems out of form in South Africa. He is not able to hit the ball cleanly as he has been doing in the past. Many times he fails to connect the bat to the ball.

The top order has failed throughout the tournament and at that stage it would be unfair to dump all the workload on Dhoni. I think he is in reasonably good form considering the pressure situations he has been involved in.
