When the push button phone first came out people who could use a calculator really well could dial the phone to fast for the phone to dial the number so the keypad was put on upside down to slow them down

Theres no particular reason. As there were no industry standards set for numeric pads, some manufacturers of products such as phones, put 123 at the top of the pad whereas keyboards and calculators put 789 at the top. Its by chance it worked this way rather than by design. Now that everyone is used to this I presume this is how it will stay.

maybe alot of people would get confused and instead of figuring out thier mathematical questions, they ended up calling someone. turning the numbers upside down help people to remember what is a calculator and what is a phone.

The calculator keypads have been designed to imitate the numeric keypads used in funds registers. the telephone key pads have been designed so the alphabet does no longer be upside-down, variety of.

I've wondered that too. It was probably bad planning a long time ago and no one has changed it since then.
