I've moved into this house on a main road and the windows are single glazed so my room is pretty noisy. I've been sleeping (just!) but I'm worried that I won't be getting good quality sleep. Shall I demand that my landlord double glazes the windows or will I just get used to it?

Were the windows single glazed when you agreed to rent the house? Yes. Then why would you expect the landlord to spend all that money? Get used to it or move to a house not on a main road.

Double glazed windows will probably not help that much. We use to live by a busy 4 lane road. I never got use to it but I learned to live with it. I do not think that you would be able to demand your landlord to put new windows in.

You will get used to the noise, honest! The landlord has no responsibility to upgrade your windows to double glazing. The price of you rent should reflect the fact that it is a little noisy. You might suggest that he/she might change it to double glazing to improve the cost of income.

Your trouble is very common. Did you know that a lot of people complain about the surf noise when they live in ocean / beach front properties.
Your best bet is to just get used to it and you will eventually sleep much more better.

i dunno...i never got used to noise outside my window. You can try running a fan or humidifier while you sleep. That helped me out alot!

Believe it or not, you will get used to it.
We used to live near railroad tracks!
