hacking is neutral. What and why you hack, is what makes it "good" or "bad".
@bassem
"it's not a sin for me, cause why do you make it soooo easy to hack your files ? "
First off, you are not a hacker. It is not "soooo easy to hack your files", this commend leads me to belive that you are nothing better then a low rate uneducated script kiddy. So, I belive you have no right to comment on the ethics of hacking due to not being a "hacker". Second... it is easy to pick up a gun and kill your neighbor as he sleeps, this does not make right (or in other words "not a sin").
By sin, what comes to mind is the teachings of the bible and a set of rules outlined by the ten commandments in old testament. If you "hack your files" as you most tactfuly put, then in fact you are stealing (or at very least, a point can be made you are stealing as posed in the book "computer ethics"), content which does not belong to you, and stealing is a sin.
This brings me to my point that hacking is neutral, and in this case it would be "black hat" and a sin.
Also, you wrote...
"Make ur security better and don't transform hacking into an ethical subject! "
Which shows how you are simply not educated on the subject of "ethics" , much less computer ethics....
Just because the temptation is there, does not make it right to act upon it. for these reasons I will downvote your responce because it is incorrect.
@dragonlord
"in the old days a hacker and hacking meant being able to get a computer or network to do what you want in ways that it was not documented. "
The history of hacking goes much deeper then you make it appear. Hacking itself has been around for a great deal of time before computers were ever created. Some argue, (as in the book "steal this computer book 4.0") that hacking can be seen as far back as when telephone companies would higher young boys to route calls at switchboards. The reason being that young men were able to adapt to the new technology (telephones) very quickly. Shortly later, many of these boys would place "prank phone calls" by listening in on conversations, connecting callers to incorrect numbers, and just causing general mischief and chaos. Shortly later did the telephone companies remove young men from directing calls, and replaced them with mature older women.
I maintain hacking goes much farther back then that, and that hacking itself is more of a human characteristic and even a highly advanced form of logical deduction and method to achieve set goals.
so, to say "in the old days a hack[ing]", would not give justice to the history of hacking.
=)

Depends on what you mean by hacking, in the old days a hacker and hacking meant being able to get a computer or network to do what you want in ways that it was not documented. Thus proving your expertise with technology. In those days doing it for a criminal act or to abuse someone else, you were called a Cracker. The media however has lost the real meaning of the words and a Cracker today is called a hacker, and stealing in real or digitally is a sin. Today we are trying to define what a good hacker is again by using terms as white hat.
Gaining access to a restricted network used to be just to show it can be done.
So.... if you mean hacking with intent to do harm, to a company or to people... yes it is a sin. Although I would prefer to say it is criminally wrong than use the word sin.

Is it a sin to use a crowbar to break into someone's filing cabinet? Is it a sin to steal confidential documents, and profit from them? Is it a sin to violate someone's privacy and security? I think so. Not only that, but I know of no religions that tolerate or condone such behaviour.

This depends on the person and his beleives, and no it's not a sin for me, cause why do you make it soooo easy to hack your files ? if you found 1000$ on the street wouldn't you pick them up and don't even bother to ask who's the owner ? And it's the same with hacking if you found passwords-bank accounts-credit card numbers laying here and there wouldn't u pick those up too ??
Make ur security better and don't transform hacking into an ethical subject!
