ok i have this friend who can burn me a disk of this game. The game requires a CD key upon installation. The game is used to go on the net against others. The thing is that only one of us can be on at once cuz we got the same CD key. It is perfectly ok to create more than one account for one Cd key. Is it illegal if he burns me the disk and we share CD keys? Isn't it like borrowing except we dont have to keep giving the disks back and forth? Is it legal as long as both of us cant be on at once?

To copy any item for your own use is perfectly LEGAL, and in fact, we were ENCOURAGED to do that, with all software, before 1986, and the advent of the MULTIPLE CONVICTED PIRATE FELON MICROSOFT (Groklaw has over 361 Lost Microsoft cases on file!).

We were taught to make a 'daughter' copy of the media, to store in the filing cabinet, and then a grand daughter of the media, to run on the system! The original got locked in the coolest room in the house, in a fireproof safe.

I make a copy of all the games and movies that the children will play, cuz they are hell on media!

BUT, you can both be sued, banned, fined by people who have some real horsepower and don't like it when they don't get a royalty or a few million...

Think of it this way. The money you pay helps go towards the future development of the product, and compensates the people who worked hard to create and market it.

Just think how bad it feels when someone "borrows" from you, and never pays you back. Yeah, it is about the Golden Rule.

You just told the world all about you.

So long as you only lend him the CD, and keep the keys to yourself, then there is no problem, and he will be happy :-) It sounds like your friend is on the level, and you can help him out, without any drama :-) (legally there is no issue either, because what you pay $'s for is the key... not the CD). Note: If you were to give him (or anyone) the keys to your CD, then there is a problem. Win2000 and earlier - no issues (apart from moral ones). WinXP (and WinVista)... the keys are actually part of what gets sent to Microsoft for registration/authentication purposes. If a key is used on more than one machine you can end up with your system not working (or his, or more likely, both). :-) Addendum: Regarding copying the CD. The CD is actually copy protected quite seriously. There are obviously programs available that happily remove copy-protection, but they are not legal, so if anyone asks, I didn't tell you this ;-) (If you don't have access to CP removal tools, then copying the CD will produce a blank unusable CD... or you could email me and I could help you out :-) The CD does not contain any key information...

Well, you can make as many copies of something that you own as you'd like. When you give those copies out, it's illegal. You can't legally both use the same CD Key, but it doesn't really seem to matter if you can't both be on at one time. I would just recommend coming up with $30 and buying your own key.

There are exceptions to the rule, but they don't apply to games. You can get corporate licenses for office software that allows one key to be installed on an unlimited number of machines, but those businesses also pay for hundreds of licenses (keys) for use on each computer. Allowing one key to install on multiple machines makes for faster installation on big networks.

borrowing - when something physically leaves your possession for a time period until its returned to you

its not borrowing, as he still has a copy of it. when he give yosu a copy, he is not committing a federal crime (really). you can't share cd keys for the same reason.
