The first flat map of the world--that we know of--was created in 120 AD by the mathematician, geographer, astronomer, and astrologer, Claudius Ptolemy. Oh, and Eric the Red encountered Greenland in 982.

Re map -consider Mercator who devised a projection of a spherical shape onto a flat page. Otherwise the very first "map" was created near the dawn of time. There is a legend of a King of Sparta who was shown a map of the way to Persia - but he was smart enought to realise that what looked a short distance on paper was thousands of miles in real life. As to Greenland - speaking purely from memory - I thought it was Erik the Red. Do check that.

You could try a search for map projections and work from there. By the way, I recall that Greenland is associated with Denmark. Trust that gets you going and hope you find what you need to know, but if this is for homework then you should do the leg work.

I concur with a search for: Map Projections, that shoud do the trick. You should recognize a name on the list of projections. Your teacher must have mentioned it.
