Blood meal is also an excellent source of nitrogen for your hostas.
I have also made a ring of bare copper wire set on the ground, under the plants, encircling my hostas.
There is something to the effect that the slugs get a minuscule shock when they come into contact with the wire, that deters their advancements onto the plant. (it's the copper).
Hope this helps,
Dave

I think i remember reading in the Gardens Alive organic gardening catalog that there is some kind of slug barrier you can put around your hostas. I understand that you don't want to kill the little slimeys but the other alternative is to put beer in a can lid and let the slugs get drunk - but then they drown as a result. Gardens Alive may also have a slug repellant that doesn't kill them, I'm not sure. I don't have a slug problem thank goodness. Good luck finding an alternative to killing your slugs.

as far as i know the best way to get rid of them is to place some jar lids filled with beer near your hostas. the slugs will either avoid the smell or get drunk in the beer and you can move them to another area

I read that if you put a saucer of beer near the hosta, the slugs will go for it. But I think that they will drown in it.

I have a book about orchids and it said one of the ways that you can get rid of a slug is to use... beer! Yeah, beer. Just have several small plates filled with beer and place them around your plant. The slugs will drink it and drown themselves in it. I haven't tried it myself, but you could give it a try. If it doesn't work out, then sorry for the advise.

Slugs, rabbits, AND deer were eating my hostas and I sprinkled blood meal around them this Spring and nothing bothered them. You can buy it in the garden section of Wal-Mart

have you ever seen slugs on the Hostas,in case you do see them , next time leans over and eliminate it from the plant, straightforward, difficulty-free, possibilities are intense you absolutely have some slugs and in case you may eliminate them with the help of hand at the same time as ever you spot one, or seem for them and whip them out that way. Snails love and want very damp soil to stay in, additionally they prefer damp pine straw, in case you pine straw is previous, rake it remote from the Hostas and both remove it or discover the snails likely residing in it, kill them, spread the straw, enable it dry and reuse it. There are different insects that chew leaves too. sturdy success, positioned on gloves and in case you gotta kill, do it ala organic.
