When I taught third grade, Ancient Egypt was one of our major Social Studies units, and one of my favorite things to do was run centers for the children with the following activities:

1. Make Your Own Cartouche (name in heiroglyphics). The children could type in their own names at the website: http://touregypt.net/ename/ to see it in heiroglyphics, OR you could type their names in in advance and print the designs. Then the children can draw their own versions vertically, like real cartouches. I displayed the finished (colorul) products in the classroom.

2. Season Shadow Boxes: the children can learn about the three seasons in Ancient Egypt - flooding, farming, and harvesting. I have three groups and they each work to make a diorama (in a shoebox) to one particular season. When the centers are done, the children can see the shadow boxes in the room (in order) and commit them to memory better.

3. Ancient Egypt Scavenger Hunt: I gathered many books from the school library about Ancient Egypt and basically typed up questions from the curriculum and tests they would take. They had to do their best to find all of the answers using the resources. I timed each group and they enjoyed competing.

You can always add more centers, but this is a start if you want to have three groups that switch activities over three class days. Our group also needed to learn about the map of Egypt and we made a giant one on posterboard by pushing down playdough (yellow for the desert, blue for the Nile, etc.)

I hope this helps. Have fun! :o)
