i had an exam yesterday (i am 38 wks and 6dys) and since then i have had brown spotting. it is thick and gel like (sorry TMI) the doc. said that i would spot, but it looks like gel so i was just wondering what this might be and if anyone else has gone through this. i am not dialated nor efaced...i was totally bummed when the doc. told me that, but i know that things could quickly change...or they could stay the same. anyhow, if anyone has experienced this please let me know.

The gel is probably part of your plug. No biggie.

You could be dilating, maybe not.

HOWEVER dilation is a poor predictor of labour. Some women are 5cm dilated and 905effaced for weeks (if not months) and still have long labours.

Some people are 0cm dilated and 0% effaced, go into labour and have a baby 4 hours later.

Your mucous plug is probably coming out along with the spotting, this occurs when you begin to dilate. Mucous plug is usually clear, thick gel like, but since you had an exam and you are so close to delivering it is not unusual for small amounts of blood to mix with it giving it a brownish color. Sounds like the baby will be here soon (between a couple of days to 2 weeks), Congrats!!

Every time you have an exam where the OB sticks their finger up there to check for dilation and whatnot, you have the chance of a little spotting. The fact that it's gel-like means your OB could've rubbed off some cervical mucous. It happens, it's normal, and even though you're pregnant and totally strung out on hormones, try NOT to freak :) I had a few instances early on in my pregnancy, and the first time I called my OB at about 3 AM totally freaking out only to be told "go back to bed, you're fine!"

It could be that part of your mucous plug is shedding and that you will soon lose the whole plug. Once you lose your plug -- you'll most likely go into labor within a week to ten days.

I know the last few weeks are the hardest -- hang in there!

Happy birthing to you and good luck!!

If this is your first one. it will still take some time but it might be the mucous plug slowly coming out. Still you need to be at least 5 minutes apart before they take a first timer. They didn't take me at 6am.. I went back at 11:30am and had the baby at 12:17 so just time yourself.. as long as you don't feel contractions don't worry yet.

spotting is normal after an internal exam. The discharge could be just that normal discharge, it can get thick at the end. Or it can be part of your mucus plug.

Sounds to me like you are spotting and getting rid of the gel they use to check you without hurting you. Sorry. Hopefully I am wrong and it means your baby is going to be here soon. Good luck and congrats.

spotting from exams are usually not thick or gel like. Sounds like you are losing your mucus plug.

it sounds like your mucus plug is coming out and that you may be spotting because of the exam.
