I dont know much about London and their homeless issue. But I do have an oppinion on homelessness in general. The problem with most of the westernised world is we are too caught up in our own needs. This can be seen by the policies that governments adopt and the attitudes in the media.

Statistically homeless people usually have a disability or mental illness and another disorder (dual diagnosis) such as substance abuse etc.(definition of homelessness being that the person has no security of tenure - no home of their own, that has security, no family etc) (staying with friends indefinitely would be considered homeless as would be staying in a shelter or emergency home or refuge or residential unit)

They lack a lot of social skills and every day living skills to get by - for example they may have had a home of their own but they lost it because they were not able to budget or could not get on with the neighbours.

I think that more money needs to given by governments for holistic services that can help people obtain and maintain a place of their own. Workshops that can help people budget and get along with neighbours and a home visiting service that can remind people to take their medication.

I also think that people in general should be more tolerant and understanding that when life deals you a bad hand you could also find yourself homeless, alone where no one gives a damn, rather then this "stuff you jack I am alright atitude - its not my problem I have a home" attitude that is quite pervalent.

i think homelessness is disgusting. its awful all over Britain, but i'm sure it's worse in London, with it being a city, and people going there in false hope of an improved lifestyle. If the government/ authorities/ councils/ social services were to put more into solving this problem, things could be so much better for all those involed. Some places refuse to help homeless folk if they arn't legally homeless. You could be sleeping on the street, perhaps even have a family, not a penny to your name, and they still refuse to help. They claim to support and help you out if you have children and are homeless, but there are so many criteria which have to be met, it's ridiculous, adn in all too many cases, impossible that you will be helped. What's even worse is the amount of people that are let into the country, who arnt able to support themselves. The money and resources spent on immigrants who cannot afford to live here, and subsequently drain resources. would give a serious boost in the right direction for British homelessness. For a developed, advanced society, Britain has a major problem, but as has been said before, it seems the rest of the world's problems take priority, while British folk sleep on the street. As i said, i think it's disgusting.

Homelessness is bad anywhere, when I lived in the US a homeless man always camped out by the bus stop I used and after speaking to him for a while I found out that he fought in Vietnam for his country the US! Now why does a country he fought for allow him to be homeless? In the UK we like someone else stated allow through immigration alot of foreigners, give them a house (furnished), money every week, free health care and yet we have homeless UK citizens! where is the logic in that?

Dreadful but why do people keep flocking there with no accomodation. London is full of foreigners so don't expect any help it's a case of 'I'm alright Jack'. There should be more hostels for the young and the mentally ill, others could get work but without an address it's not possible....stay at home

I think the fact that people claim to be homeless is a shame. If you are a legal resident a home should be provided and homelesness whould not exist.
If you are illegal then I really do not care

It chokes me to see the indigenous population being kicked about the streets of our country when foreigners can walk in and be given the best of everything, a fully equiped home and all the cash they like regardless of the fact they have not paid into the system. It's time we made our feelings known and tossed New Labour out to the dump where they belong.

i think its terrible. i wanna help everyone of them. you know once i came out of leicester square tube station and there was a homeless guy curled up on the floor (winter time) no shoes/socks, shivering, blood pouring out his head and everyone walked on past - everyone looking no-one helping. the guy looked like he was literally dying, in his last hours of life. people were looking at him like he was vermin. after seeing that i couldnt enjoy the rest of my night. i had seen a side of humans that i had never seen before and that night changed my life forever. i have never forgotten that since. lets hope the above poster never gets into such dire circumstances for his own self. wheres your love? next time anyone of us walks past a homeless person, be different - turn around - dont be afraid to give some love and help that person, even if everyone looks at you like your crazy. you'd be doing the right thing

Homelessness, no matter where in the world is unfortunate and sad. Especially when there are children involved.
